Friday, May 24, 2024 saw the Junee Senior Citizen’s Hall filled with local residents supporting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in Junee to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Through the $10 entry fee, raffle ticket sales, a few fun games, two silent auctions, and generous donations (both online and on the day), the event raised $2,314.60.
Laila, our host for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in Junee, is a 17 year old, Year 12 student at Junee High School and she chosen to host this event to raise money for those who suffer from cancer and for their families. One of Ms Kumar’s grandmothers passed away from cancer a year ago and Ms Kumar said “Seeing how a loved one suffering from cancer directly affected my family, and especially how it affected my grandmother, has motivated me to host this event in Junee”
Although Ms Kumar only recently moved to Junee, to be with her mother, maternal grandmother, and two younger siblings, she has already volunteered for a number of local fundraisers including assisting with Junee High School cater for the Junee View Club’s Fashion Parade last year.
Most attendees arrived between 10:30am and 11:30am for morning tea… then as that initial crowd dispersed, quite a number of people drifted in around lunch time for a cuppa and a slice of cake or something savoury, and many more later dropped in for a quick afternoon snack.
Laila also ducked up to Junee High School to sell raffle tickets and a couple plates of snacks to her teachers. Meanwhile, Arya, her brother, and Kieran, her partner, took to the streets of Junee to visit local businesses to sell small plates of snacks.
Ms Kumar said, “My initial goal was to raise $1,000 for the Cancer Council, but thanks to the generosity of the Junee community we smashed that goal and raised more than double – a total of $2,314.60… so far!”
Over two dozen local businesses from Junee and Wagga donated over $1,200 worth of prizes and/or platters of food for the event. The Junee Senior Citizen’s Club generously waived the Halls’ hire fee for the day. Junee Community Network and the Junee Ex-Services Memorial Club provided invaluable marketing resources to promote Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in Junee.
Together, we can help the Cancer Council raise much needed funds that go towards vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs, and advocacy.
